“The Past “ - Daryle Lambert's Antique and Collectible Blog - But what is new?

I was going over the blogs that I have written for more than a two year period and realized that most of them were about what I have done in the past. Yes, those blogs were intended to educate the readers and give them direction toward items that would make them money but I as I read them I began to ask myself “What have I done lately”?

That is a fair question - because my primary attention has been on upgrading the website and finding the right people to take the “Daryle Lambert's Antique and Collectible Club” to the next level. I feel however that by giving all my attention on the structure of the club, I have short changed the readers by not showing them what can be accomplished by doing the plan that I set out in my book, myself.

Yes, the first attempt to demonstrate the power of compounding by the club met with great success when $100 was turned into $7,500 in just six months. This represented 750% return on the money in a very short period of time. However, I haven't stayed focused on continuing the “31 Steps” of success on a regular basis. I hope to start doing that again from this moment forward because I recently connected with a firm that can relieve me of the primary obligation of tending to the necessary everyday maintenance of the club's site. I will be bringing you more information on our new partners next week and hope to be able to share what they have in mind for the development of the club's site at that time.

Because of the technical aspects of “Daryle Lambert's Antique and Collectible site”, I haven't been able to update the “Million Dollar Race” inventory page but I do have some great news to share with you. The club did purchase several paintings at one time and in that grouping one of the paintings sold for $25,000. Once I am able to update the inventory, you will be able to see that the club is still heading to the finish line at full speed and if you hope to beat us there, you will have to kick it up a notch. There are many places for a person to get information but at the 31 Club there is more for members of the club than just information. We are in this together and will succeed together.

In the coming weeks I hope to report more progress being made with the purchase of some wonderful treasures from auctions, house and garage sales, plus purchases from individuals by the club. Also, the way these new purchases are sold will be shared in future blogs. This should demonstrate where and how items that are purchased can be sold most effectively. Most of our members have been very patient but I believe that your patience is close to being rewarded so stay tuned for the excitement to come.

If you haven't checked your progress lately it would be a great time to do so because we are going to be in the home stretch of our race very soon. This is the time to follow the straight line to the finish and a refresher course of reading our guide book might be in order.

“ Bronze Sculptures “ - Daryle Lambert's Antique and Collectible Blog – Price could be right.

Every Antique and Collectible has its day and that is what we should be keeping our eye no. Yes most of the items that were so briskly sought after a few years ago have dropped in market value but we have to know when they have reached the bottom and they may start to regain their past values. I believe this is the time to take notice of quality bronze sculptures.

There have been at least two situations that have contributed to the drop in value of Bronzes. First we have a market that has been plummeted by this recession and second people are very leery of bronze sculptures today because of the number of fakes or reproductions. However we shouldn't get caught in the frame of mind that bronzes have no value today because the true artist pieces actually should be more valuable today than they were several years ago. All market cycles tend to over do a correction both up and down and in my opinion bronzes have dropped far past their actual values. This applies to all real bronze pieces whether figurines, candelabrum's or other items..

I sold a bronze candelabrum for $2500 about eight years ago and today I would be lucky to get $500 for it but the actual value probably would be over $5000 if I could find the true collector. The same situation happen with a Chiparus figurine that bought me over $1500 but when I look on eBay its value now may be only $500. These prices in todays market are out of tune with the true artistic value of these pieces. Remember that there will be no more of the first cast bronzes ever made again because the molds were destroyed. Yes there can be recast of the original castings but they will be made by using one of the originals to make a new molds so the size will always be different.

There are many names of artist that worked in bronze that you should watch for and I will list just a few: Erte, Frishmuth, Matisse, Meme, Rodin, Chiparus, Degas and Remingtom. All of these have been reproduced so you will have to do you research to be assured that you are buying the genuine article. Some of my friends have been fortunate enough to buy what were called fakes by the sellers but proved to be the real thing and their reward for knowing the difference made them a great deal of money.

Here is a story for you, in the western suburbs of Chicago there was this house sale where they were offering a large bronze and if I remember right the price was about $12,500. Finding no takers the piece was consigned to an auction where the final hammer price was $125,000 plus. That would make you think that perhaps it would be worth you time to do a little study on bronzes. Now for a sad story, I was attending a house sale and found this rather small Remington bronze of a cowboy priced at $850 but not being as knowledgeable on bronzes as I would like to be I decided to go home and research it. There it was in one of my bronze book valued at about $25,000 so I almost broke my neck racing to the car and sped back to the sale. Entering the front door I raced to the table where I had found it but to no great surprise it had been sold. That night I am sure there was one happy camper out there somewhere and if you spend some time studying bronzes that same thing could happen to you.

This is the time that great men and women rise to the top so I will meet you at the peak.

Over the last couple of years I have suggested to my readers that anything that can be bought in quantity might be worth while. Boxes of hot wheels, coins, hummels, ties, figurines and paintings are just a few examples of things that I have suggested you buy in past blogs.

Did I say ties. What a coincident in fact I just wrote on buying groups of ties yesterday and what did I get an email on today, you guessed it ties. But before I get to the ties I ask you to remember the story where I bought three boxes of Boehm dogs for around $3000 that sold for $25,000 or the hummels that were purchased for a little over $8000 which brought $25,000 and then there were the 300 or so Disney Original figures in the green boxes the that I am sure profited me by at least $40,000 even after splitting some of the profit with my friend Warner. These figures can be your if you find large groups on items that can be purchased for very little when they are bought together.

But now back to the email and I think that I will let it speak for itself.

I couldn't figure out how to post a comment, so I will write you instead. I laughed aloud when I saw your topic for today.

When Ron and I seriously started to get into buying and selling antiques and collectibles, we often got "lucky" by not knowing what we were doing! When I saw two boxes of old neck ties at an auction, I casually mentioned to Ron that I thought I had read something about them. I had to leave the auction and left him with the warning, Don't spend too much!!

When I got home that night, I had two large boxes of neckties in my living room. I thought, Oh no. I said what did you pay?? He said everyone was laughing at him for buying them. He paid $1.50 for the two boxes!!!!! I counted and we had 298 vintage men's neckties!

I still have not listed them all yet, but I pulled out one and made $40.00 on that first one. After getting over 150.00 on just a few, I quit counting. That reminds me that I need to get the rest of them back out and finish selling them!! Old hat bands sell well, too.

“ Men Can Get in The Act “ Mens Ties - Daryle Lambert's Antique and Collectible Blog - Neckties.

You know it seems like men have been left out of the fashion world when it comes to clothing and its desirability but I may have a surprise for you. Mens shoes don't sell like womens and their attire doesn't meet the astronomical prices that the designer dresses bring but lets look at men ties.

Yes mens ties can put money in your pocket, especially if they are by the right designer. Most of the ties that are bringing big money are from the 30's and 40's eras. Do you remember those wide ties that seemed to almost touch the ground? Often those ties had outrageous designs that seemed to come from outer space. I can still see the dancers as their ties were flying in the wind with dances such as the fox trot and swing. Those times seem so for away but they were fun and the people were happy, so what has happen today.

There are several types of ties to watch for the first being those of well know designers such as Gianni Verace. The second most sought after ties would be those with pretty girl or animals decorating them and third would be just great old ties with outstanding designs. The wonderful thing about ties is usually you find more than one at a time and they often are from the same era so if one is from the 40's then there may be a dozen from those years.

I have found that most ties are priced from $.50 to a $1.00 and considering that the right one can command prices as high $500 or more this makes them treasures and definitely worth watching for. Don't be surprised as you hunt for ties that one will pop up and have a signature on it. You see in years past whenever someone met a celebrity they often would have them sign their tie. Back seventy years ago most people didn't have a lot but if they could get a movie star or sport figure to sign their tie it immediately became a true keep sake. I wish that I had kept my Dad's old ties but they got lost in the shuffle after his death. But second thought if I had kept them they wouldn't be for sale at any price.

During these difficult times when it is hard to turn a buck just thinking about spending $1.00 and receiving $200 in return seems to way to go, so at the next garage or house sale you attend don't pass by the closet where the mens ties are hanging.

“Lesson Learned” - Daryle Lambert's Antique and Collectible Blog – I was amazed.

I have been trying to sell six serigraphs for over six months with no success, in fact I just got through posting them on eBay again but got no bids. Being at the point of wondering what to do with these prints and knowing winter was coming my thoughts were maybe they would make a great fire. That was until I received an email from David.

These serigraphs came from a very wealthy home where most of the art was in the $10,000 range and up so I knew that the owners had paid a considerable amount for them but after many hours of research I couldn't come up with any comps. Wanting to sell these prints I put what I thought was a very reasonable price on each one knowing that they would belong to someone else very quickly. To my surprise I could find no interest and finally stooped to my last resource ebay to sell them. Still no success and my patience had finally run out.

This is where David comes in with his email like a knight on a white horse. His email read “ Would you accept an offer for all of them. “ I took a deep breath and replied “Yes but I would like for you to call me.” It wasn't long before David called and we spent a rather long time getting to know each other before there was even a mention of the serigraphs. When the conversation finally turned to the prints it was if we had known each other forever. His first suggestion was “ I can sell them for twice what your asking and we could be partners. David's suggestion sounded great to me but what was the percentage that each of us was going to receive. After the percentage had been discussed I knew that I was dealing with an honest man and the first box of prints are on their way to him as we speak.

But what is the lesson in the story you are asking? There is usually someone in the marketplace that has a better sense of the particular market than you if it isn't your specialty. If you can't find the ultimate buyer often it might be in your best interest to work with someone that is a specialist in what you're wanting to sell. In my case David will double my asking price for the serigraphs and maybe more. So by dealing with him I went from owning six pieces of paper that I couldn't sell to receiving twice what I was asking but getting no interest. This business is about networking and not about being the Lone Ranger.

“Hummels Coming Back” - Daryle Lambert's Antique and Collectible Blog – Earlier than I thought.

I have been wrong before but still I thought it would take five years or more before the Hummel market could be revived. In fact I had put this market on the back burner and planned to erase it from my wish list of treasures for a while. I believe that I under estimating the effect that Goebel ceasing to product these figurines would have on the marketplace. This unfortunately effected my thinking and now I have to reverse coarse and reconsider what I want to do with Hummels in the future.

In October of 2008 Goebel announced that they would no longing manufacture the Hummel figurines after February 2009. However a new company formed by investors took the challenge and said they were going to product these figurines however they started with only 30 employee's and that might make it difficult for them to succeed. We know now that the last piece has been made by Goebel and that now the serious collectors can again start completing their collections of the original Hummels.

From a market where there were few bids for Hummels I now find that the larger pieces are commanding $500 to $1500 which still isn't bad for just a figurine. Knowing that there will no longer be any of the Goebel pieces product will make originals much more desirable just like when an artist dies his painting sky rocket in price.

It may be time to look for multiple pieces that you can purchase at the right price but continue to realize that the older the mark on a Hummels the more valuable it will be. If there are ones with the Crown or Full Bee mark those will be the ones most sought after.

There are several larger Hummels being offered on eBay that exceed $1000 such as: The nativity series for $2800, Adventure Bound $2550, and the Umbrella Boy and Girl for $2450. These pieces still haven't been sold but figurines like the : Harmony in Four Parts $532, Land in Sight $531, pleasant Journey $485 and Chapel Time $450 have sold. This leads me to believe the market in Hummels is stabilizing and perhaps the low has been reach. This is when you should re-enter this market and the ride up should produce some fantastic profits for you.
