When things look bad, we shop. It's much better to go shopping than to reach for the cigarettes. Quitting is so hard, and dire circumstances make it even harder. Quitting gives you more money so you can shop for things you really want. And "retail therapy" has always provided a welcome relief to whatever your circumstances.

My name is Judy and I am a collector of wirehaired terrier dogs. The ceramic ones. All shapes and sizes, even pillows pictures and clothes. Why? I was young only 24 when my husband bought me that dog. He had just come back from Viet Nam. He died the next year. That dog was everything to me. Now 37 years later I have my little dogs. You are so right about why we collect.

Re: frame condition, in most cases my advice would be not to bother with repairs. Most auction houses, ours included, don't even show the frame in catalogues because it's not material to the work. Frames are a personal choice, and many people will want to re-frame the work they buy. If the frame is original to the piece and might have some historical significance, consult a conservator; otherwise, it's not worth the effort.

I really enjoyed this blog. I recently wrote an appraisal for an older lady who had the most amazing collection of WWI photo's, Postcards and medals all belonging to her direct ancestor. It was a great education for me as well. I ended up valueing her collection at 4000.00. That of course is a "replacement" value. But really they are priceless. He had some great photo's of the dead enemy, bombed out buildings in France - including Notre Dame, and Gen. Pershing, The French Gen. (forgot his name) and some other remarkable and important historical Generals and officers. What a joy it was to do, and what a great education for me! Vicki H.

He must be a new reader. I have written on this subject several times in the past. I have now just taken a position and am sorry you don't agree. I write about what is going to happen in the marketplace of antiques, collectibles and why. However it is my blog and it is your right to not read it at anytime.
