Will You Recognize Works by Crossover Artists?




Louis Comfort Tiffany, the King of Glass, whose glass window works might fetch over $1,000,000 also made pottery and painted canvasses. Glass Master, Emile Galle, also painted, as did Charles Stewart Todd, one of Rookwood Pottery’s leading artists. So, why is this important for us to know? If we can connect a name with items that most people don’t usually associate with a particular artist, there can be some real money to be made.

An artist can be talented in more than one area. This can be a sculptor who occasionally painted or a painter who occasionally sculpted. An artist who works in glass might have loved to make furniture or loved to paint. Few people realize that Louis Comfort Tiffany was also a potter whose works are highly sought after, and his paintings can also bring a pretty penny. It might amaze you to know that in 2005, an 18x24 inch of Tiffany canvas board sold for $156,000. I didn’t even like it, but there was one buyer who was willing to pay that price to add it to his or her collection.

Emile Galle, one of my favorite glass artists, was also a crossover artist. While his glass vases are sought after by collectors all over the world and command prices right up there with Tiffany, he also painted. And these can be quite valuable as well.

You might not recognize the name Charles Stewart Todd unless you were familiar with the top artists who worked through Rookwood Pottery, but I recently discovered he also painted canvasses while I was checking out a painting at an auction house. It was signed CWT, and I wondered if it could be the same as the potter whose work I keep an eye out for. As most my readers know by now, I’m originally from Kentucky and I keep an eye out for works by Kentucky artists, and Charles Stewart Todd came from a town close to my hometown. All it took to get the answer to my question was to read the sales flyer and yes, it was the same artist. You can be assured I’ll be watching this auction with extra interest.

You might want to check out a few of the Rookwood artists to see if they worked in other areas. Most artists are better recognized for their work in one field rather than the other. Even so, when they have dabbled in another field and you’ve found an item of theirs in a category they aren’t usually known for, it can be gold for you.

Outsider Artist, Doug Odom

I have to admit, I couldn't stay away from the Glenview art show yesterday. This urge to return and tell the two wonderful ladies at the show I had written about in the previous blog overtook me I’m very hopeful my readers will follow these artists, because I think their art will be searched out in the future by collectors and will survive the test of time. While I wasn’t looking for thanks, they thanked me so much, and I assured them this wasn’t going to be the last time they heard from me.

While my opinions from the previous day remain the same, there were a few of the artist who caught my eye again once I returned, but they were the same ones as before. And, while this is just one man’s opinion, this is all I can write about from the show. However, I did meet up with an old friend who was exhibiting, and I can once again say he was the hit of the show. I mentioned in yesterday’s blog I would write about this special artist today.

He is perhaps the best known outsider artist around, and his paintings are unique, and I knew I wasn’t alone in my opinion when I stood in his booth, crowded with people commenting in awe and excitement in their voices as they viewed his work for the first time. Once you see one of his paintings you can't help but comment on it. His name is Doug Odom, and one of the things I like best about his work is that it appeals to both children and adults.

Doug had became a friend of mine almost a year ago. In fact, he was a guest in my home and I got to spend some quality time with him. However, our friendship doesn't reflect in my judgment of his talent, which is huge. I never tireof his good old boy demeanor as he tells his audience about life in lower Alabama. Whether you wear a suit or a pair of jeans, you’ll stop and listen to what Doug is saying. I overheard a conversation between Doug and a gentleman in his booth that made me, as well as everyone else roar with laughter. The man asked Doug if he had an e-mail address, and Doug replied, “Not in Alabama.”

“How about a phone number?”

“Not one you could reach me on,” Doug replied.

By this time, I could see from the gentleman’s face he was getting frustrated, but it was then Doug told him, “I can tell you where I live.”

“Are you sure,” the man asked tongue in cheek, and the crowed gave out a huge laugh.

If you know me, I’m sure you’ll know by know that one of my stories is coming about this point, so here goes: As I was making my way toward Doug's booth, I noticed a man carrying a very large painting, but it was facing away from me. I walked around the man because I thought I recognized it. Sure enough, it was one of Doug's works I’ll call “The Yellow School Bus.” You see, I had seen him working on this piece the day before. At that time, it was just this large yellow bus with children riding on it. While I hung around his booth, I noticed that as children approached this painting he would ask them if they’d like to ride on the bus. If their answer was yes, he’d ask where they wanted to sit. You might have guessed, but when they told Doug where they wanted to sit, he’d paint them into the piece right where they chose to sit and added their name to the piece.

So, when I arrived at Doug’s booth, I thought I’d have a little fun with him. He saw me and I started looking around at the paintings. “Where’s my painting,” I asked Doug?

“Which one,” he asked?

“The Yellow School Bus.”

He thought for a moment, then pointed up the aisle and said, “It went that away.”

I couldn’t help but tell him I’d seen the man carrying it, and Doug told me it was going into a museum. Keep a keen eye out for Doug’s work because people haven’t yet fully recognized how unique it is. Our gallery has two of his pieces available and you can view them here.

The Art of the Deal


Being away this week is really hard for me. I have a lot on my mind, particularly the offer I made on a Porfirio Salinas painting. Salinas is famous for his skillful artistry in painting landscapes of Texas Bluebonnets.

I’d been working on this offer for some time, and when I left Thursday, the seller and I were getting close to finalizing the sale. It looked as if my offer would be accepted. However, right before I left, the seller said they wanted to “check one more thing.” This is where a very important lesson is to be learned.

I want the painting very much, but at what cost? I’ve made my final offer, so all there is for me to do is wait. It’s difficult, and yes, I would like to offer more if that would assure me the painting would become mine. But doing so would accomplish nothing, because the seller has already stated they were going to “check one more place.”

If you can complete a sale of a painting, an antique, or a collectible item, do it while you are with that person to guarantee the best results. If the sale can’t be completed, you must stick to you guns on price when your last offer is made. This is important for the following reasons:

Raising your price against yourself will only give the seller reason to question if you have truly made your last bid. It will give them more incentive to search for a higher bid elsewhere.

If you break with the buying criteria and purchase an item figuring you can still make some profit on it, you won’t last in the business very long. You see, if you start taking less profit on one item, this can become a habit. And if the profits you are taking won’t pay your operating costs at the end of the month, you days in the business are numbered.

I can see, taste and smell that Salinas painting as mine, but not for more than I already offered. Yes, this is often a hard thing to comply with, but it’s necessary.

Still having your money in your pocket is never a losing thing in this business.

We want to turn money as fast as possible, but only if the items meet our previously set criteria.

Sticking to your guns in your buying criteria creates the pathway to meeting your financial goals. When you don’t stick to the criteria, you might as well throw stumbling stones along that pathway.

On another note, I visited 31 Club Member, Cecil R., on the way to the Smokies, and we went treasure hunting together. I didn’t find anything that was truly worth buying, however I did learn a lesson from Cecil.

In the trunk of his car, Cecil opened a box for me, containing all types of silver, from candlesticks to trays. It all must’ve weighed 15 to 20 pounds. I asked him what he was going to do with all that. “I’ll try to sell it for a couple of weeks. If it doesn’t sell, I’ll scrap it.” I like that; he considered an alternative exit strategy before he bought.

Cecil figured that at the price he purchased it all, he’d still more than double his money if he had to scrap it. Then, he chuckled and said, “There’s a lot of people who haven’t kept up to date with the price of silver.” I know he made an offer that the seller was happy with and worked for him, too.

31 Club Member Scores Another Fine Art Painting


Merriman signed, Tressemanes & Vogt 13 inch vase dating from 1892 to 1907 was acquired by 31 Club Member, Vicki.

Just a few weeks ago, William, a new 31 Club Member, made the statement to me that he didn’t know anything about Antiques or Fine Art. Today, he’s purchased several paintings at great prices and the 31 Club is his partner on two paintings he located in Houston. William has taken me at my word. I’ve said I’d mentor. I’ve said my readers can call me. And, William calls me while he’s out in the field. I can safely say, William hasn’t bought a single piece without first checking with me. I can also safely say that there’s no other place you can receive this kind of help. We offer this help to all 31 Club members.

William’s call to us yesterday resulted in the purchase of his latest find, and he decided to take us up on our offer to partner up through our Associates Program for this new piece. You see, he called me when he found a painting he thought had possibilities. (As he always does.) It was priced at $400. I asked him some questions about the piece and then did a little research on it. Turns out, the artist was from Chicago. Wow!

“We’re interested,” I told William, “But, let’s try to bargain for it.” I was soon giving the lady my credit card number and purchased the painting for $240. Bingo. I have no doubt that here in Chicago, this painting is worth more than double that price.

Vicki, one of our very first members, also called me yesterday, and what a pleasure it was. She found one of the most unusual vases I’ve come across lately. This Tressemanes & Vogt 13” tall double handled vase with a black and white nautical scene, signed “Merriman,” is a name I am familiar with. I’ll have to do my home work on this piece. I believe it could be very special.

She showed me a painting she bought by signed, “Beaman.” I knew instantly this was a winner. After some research, I was sure of it and am certain the painting will give her about 300% return on her investment. Not bad.

Vicki, like William, is out there looking, and that’s why they’ll have success in this business. The 31 Club can help you in every other way, but we can't do the looking for you. When you find something, give us a call, and we’ll help you from there.

Members are sending me auction flyers to take a look at almost every day, and it makes me so jealous that I’m not able to attend some of these great sales. When members send me this kind of information, I tell them the pieces that I’d be interested in if I were attending. From that point, it’s up to them to evaluate each piece, making certain there isn’t damage that I can’t see in the photographs.

I’m working very hard on acquiring a collection of wonderful items, and I’m hoping to be able to report their purchase to you very soon. We’ve added some fantastic Native American articles to our inventory recently, and they will soon be appearing in our gallery. We will be posting a Historical Document signed by Patrick Henry, as soon as Cecil gets me the description. Man, this place is jumping lately, and I am looking forward to all our members participating in what could be the most remarkable journey of our lives.

Jeremy’s gotten me very excited about how some of our new website projects will be working and has promised to update the 31 Club’s Spreadsheet, so you can see what progress we’ve made in our own Race to a Million Dollars.
