Daryle Lambert: May This Christmas Be Your Best

Thanks to Flicker

My family and I will be away until the 27th but there will be someone to take my messages and babysit PJ, our rabbit. This has been a year of wonderful experiences for me and my family and you, the readers and members of the 31 Club, have had a lot to do with that. I feel you have educated me more than I have you so thanks a bunch. My feelings are that the rest of the world hasn't seen anything yet because we are just starting our journey together and when we cross the finish line is when we can really celebrate.

I will not be able to ship books while I am gone but they will go out the day after my return. Thanks to all of you that have expressed what that little book “31 Steps to Your Millions” has meant to you. I have to agree though with the husband of one member who told his wife to put the book down and go to sleep because she couldn't read it all in one night.

It is hard to believe that this all started with a little boy reading “Treasure Island” many years ago and has grown to where people around the world are beginning to dream again. God blesses the person of integrity and I feel that you have surrounded me with people that reach that high standard. I am so pleased that you have chosen to enter a community with me where honesty reigns supreme. Let’s pledge to one another that next year will even be better than this one has been.

Please eat plenty of fruit cake for me over the holidays and throw in a few oranges and nuts while you’re at it but most of all enjoy your families which are the greatest gift God has given us besides his son. I would like to ask for your prayers for traveling safety for me and my family while we're away. The blog will be posted every day and if there is a special subject that you would like covered please email me and I will do my best to get the information on our site.

One thing that I believe is that most people as they age begin to believe that Christmas is just for children but I can assure you that simply isn't true. For me, I am enjoying this Christmas more than any that comes to mind over many years. I feel that when times are a little tougher than normal, people take the time to show love to others. This could explain why I am seeing more sparkle in the eyes of the children this Christmas. In fact I am seeing more adults holding hands as they walk together and even sitting a little closer together in the restaurants.

HO! HO! HO! Merry Christmas from Santa.

Daryle Lambert: Santa even checks his list.

It is time for all good boys and girls to check their list. What do I mean by that? We are nearing the end of another year and it is time to see how you've measured up in the Antique and Fine Arts business over the last twelve months. Have you stayed with the plan that is going to assure you of success or have you gone back to the old ways of doing business that meant starting over every month?

First, let’s see if you have followed the rules for success. Ask yourself these questions:

·Have I gained in knowledge of the rare and unusual antiques, collectibles and fine art pieces that I am searching for? If you have been following the recommendations of the 31 Club, you should have added the names of at least 25 new items that you have researched this year to your wish list. Do you feel confident in recognizing them if they are presented to you? If you see an item from these companies, would you know the rare from the common?

·Have I tried to stay close to my goal of buying for my inventory at 25% of what I think the retail price will be?

·Did I set up an account just for my business and leave the profits from sales in the account to buy more items?

·Here is the tough one for so many of you. Did I sell what I bought in a timely manner?

These are some of the primary rules but there are others, such as, are you still telling everyone you come in contact with about this new and exciting business that you have entered into? How many of your business cards have you handed out? They can be bought for as little as $18 for 500. Are you attending house and garage sales on a regular basis? How about auctions? Have you gone to at least one a month for the entire year? Auctions are a place of learning even if you don't purchase anything, plus, attending them is free.

Do you still have confidence in the goal that you set and has it been re-enforced by your actions this year? It isn't easy to stay on the road to success if you are always looking backwards because the key to your victory in the “Race to Your Millions” is always in front of you. I can judge how most of my readers are doing in this business by how often I hear from them, the more often the better things are going for them. Remember, this isn't a sprint but a long distance race and to succeed you must stay with the race until you cross the finish line. That will be the time to count your money.

I would say that on these cold winter nights it would be a great time to read the guide for our success again “ 31 Steps to Your Millions in Antiques and Collectibles.” Even though I wrote it, when I take the time to bring it down off the shelf, it re-lights my fire and excitement for this business, the greatest business in the world.

Make It at Home

Years ago when I went to auctions often, I would find spinning wheels and looms that were used to make cloth for clothing but I seldom see these today. But this doesn't mean they never show up and there are still collectors searching for them everyday. The best examples of spinning wheels and looms can be valued at thousands of dollars. I purchased a very fine spinning wheel out of a barn once in Indiana and took it to a flea market to sell and before I could get it out of the truck, I had people fighting over who was first in line to purchase it. However, there are several types of collectibles that were used to make life enjoyable and more interesting. I will mention a few that may be helpful in your pursuit.

It is very seldom that I attend a house sale that I don't see some type of food mold. There are candy, cake, ice cream, butter and other food molds that are eagerly sought after by the avid collector. I have seen candy molds sell for over $500 and they come in every shape, form and fashion. Santa candy molds should sell at a premium as we approach the Christmas season. Be sure to keep a close eye out for them and they can reward you handsomely when found.

Now, cake molds are a different thing. I was attending a farm sale once and there in the out building; you from the city won't know what this is but thats okay, I found a Griswold Santa cake mold in the box. I asked the price and was told $50 and so it was added to my growing pile of items to purchase. Not really wanting to part with this piece, I entered my Santa mold in a sale with what I thought was an outrageous reserve of $550 just to see what its real value was. As you may have guessed, it exceeded my reserve and I knew that even though I personally collected Griswold at the time, I would probably never own another original Santa cake mold in the box. I haven't found another one to this very day.

As for other molds, butter molds have always been a very desirable. They have been made using several different materials through the years, but the wooden ones seem to do the best in the market place. The better the design on the butter pad, the higher their value is. I once saw one with an Eagle pattern and dated, if I remember correctly, somewhere in the 1700 bring over $1,500.

I have just touch on a few of the collectible items that are available to you. It is a real tribute to the early woman that she wanted to pretty up the common things found in her house for her family. Taking pieces of colorful cloth to make wonderful quilts and homemade clothing, all the while cooking in the kitchen and making the food more appealing.

Remember this when you are out there hunting for those items that were used to make life better. These items were used and functional so few survived intact, making them rare and unusual. This is the reason the true collector is willing to pay large sums to acquire the true quality items from year's past. No one every expected them to have the value they have to day.

Time to Think Like Santa

Time is short and he's a list and checking it twice, so what do you think will be on it? Your customers are looking for that special present for that special person: do you have it for them? This is the easiest time to sell the items that you have purchased over the past year so be sure to take advantage of this season. Impulse buying is at it highest point from now until Christmas and if you have the right present, Santa has just the right person for it.

Go back to your lists of who you sold paintings, pottery or art glass to and let them know what items you currently have in inventory. Many people are like me: creatures of habit. I always go to the Brighton store to pick up some jewelry for my wife - they can count on me as a return customer for all those special occasions. Some of your customers are consistent in their buying habits. I know a person that buys his wife a piece of Lotton Glass each and every year.

This is the time to be pro-active and the rewards mayl surprise you. If you work diligently, over 50% of your sales can come over the next couple of months. This is the time for you to give your business the maximum effort. Remember the movies that depicted Santa's elves working all day and night: this is the time.

Scour auctions and antique malls for items that fulfill that special need your customer has. Call them and share what you have located. In the past this has proven very successful for me. Doing business in this manner provides you with a way to make money even before you dole out the cash. That definitely fits our goal, right?

You may even want to put some items in Christmas Auctions because many items seem to command higher prices than any other time of year. Time is of the essence for placing items in these auctions or you might be too late.

Remember, nothing is too good for a loved one. My son wants a new computer (a rather expensive Christmas gift) but it’s possible that he may just get his wish. I hope you get my point.

Shocking Isn't It? - The Lights Came On

Would you think that a vintage string of Christmas light could sell for several thousand dollars? What about a single light from the string selling for hundreds of dollars? Unthinkable, right? But it happens to be true. Remember the old bubble lights that we would watch for hours? If you can find the older ones today they will fetch a pretty penny. SHOCKING!

Those old glass ornaments, that were stored so carefully in years past, might have done much better than other investments you have made over the years. A bicycle- built-for-two ornament, made in Germany, might fetch $10,000 today, and considering that its cost was probably less than a quarter, I would say that the return was quite adequate. Animal ornaments seem to bring huge money, and I think that it is because so few were made. Reindeer, camels, birds seem to have been appropriate at the time. Even the more common one can bring $40 or more and if they are purchased for one or two dollars each. If you buy serveral, then the reward could be quite handsome.

The next thing that you may watch for is paper mache candy containers. Some of the Santa ones have been know to bring over $5,000. Not bad for pressed paper. Other pieces from the Christmas story are also in demand. These pieces were originally priced at only pennies and given as gifts for the children's pleasure. Can you imagine if you told someone back then that these candy containers would sell for thousands of dollars later? You would've been sent off to the institution, never to have been heard from again. We aren't even to the best part, yet.

Toys for Christmas have always been a hit, and never has it been more true than now. The true toy collector would go crazy over any toy about Saint Nick from the 1800's. I would say that the sky is the limit for some of the first Christmas toys. These wonderful treasures can come in cast iron, wood, paper mache or even early plastic. There are some real treasures out there just waiting for our members to find them. What are you waiting for? Hook up the sleigh and away we go, Ho Ho.

I can't wait for the first Christmass story and I know it will be coming soon.
